Those looking for an affordable entry-level Android handset will soon have another option to choose from, as Bell is reportedly getting ready to launch the LG Optimus L5. The device, which according to leaked internal documents is set for release on July 10th, is rumoured to cost around $200 outright, though we can?t confirm pricing details just yet.

The Optimus L5 features a 4? (480 x 320) touch screen display, along with a 5 MP camera that offers VGA video capture. It?s powered by an 800 MHz processor and 512 MB of RAM, and comes with a total of 4 GB of internal memory. This Android 4.0 ICS handset also offers up your standard connectivity options such as bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, and HSPA, but adds in NFC support to add extra value.

With the rumours pointing to the $200 or so mark for outright purchases, it looks like these devices may become the new ?quick messages phones?. If you?re looking for an affordable Android handset, keep an eye on Bell as they?re expected to release the LG Optimus L5 on July 10th.

Telus has recently launched a new trade-in program to encourage customers to recycle their unused devices, offering up to $200 in value. The program is relatively simple ? you can trade in up to 3 devices, for a maximum combined value of $200. You can use that ?credit? towards the purchase of a new device or accessory, though you must renew or activate a new account when doing so. The program is applicable to cell phones, mobile internet sticks and portable hotspots, but doesn?t currently extend to tablets, unfortunately.

In the press release, Telus mentioned they commissioned a survey to find out what Canadians do with their old devices. The results came in with 61% of Canadians saying they have between one and five old or unused cell phones laying around at home. This is a smart offering from Telus and eRecyclyingCorps in their collaborative effort, hopefully the appropriate value is given to those who want to take advantage!

It's clear that competition in Canada is booming right now, and as a result we're seeing most carriers launch promotions, discounts, and more. Virgin Mobile, Rogers, and Fido have all launched unlimited evenings and weekends beginning at 6pm on all price plans recently, putting more value into their existing options. Virgin Mobile and Rogers have launched the promotion for a limited time apparently, while Fido has made it a standard, permanent part of all plans. Additionally, Virgin Mobile's offer is only available to new customers, while Rogers and Fido are offering it up to anybody who renews on a 3-year term. Great to see competition resulting in price drops and added value, keep it up carriers!

The three major carriers each have some type of handset protection or replacement program, and Sasktel has joined in offering a Wireless Sevice Protection Plan of their own. The plan will cost customers either $6 or $7 monthly, depending on the value of their device, and covers accidental damage, loss, theft, and malfunction (after the manufacturers warranty expires), however normal wear and tear and cosmetic damage are not covered. Customers who pay for this additional service can make up to two claims per year, but will still be responsible for a deductible ranging from $75 - $225 in order to get a replacement handset.

Mobilicity is on a roll lately with their discounted handsets, price plans, and add-ons, and now they're offering up an amazing deal for friends and family of their employees. The new program, which is intended for those who know Mobilicity employees, gives users the option between 2 highly discounted plans - the $45 unlimited plan for just $25/month, and the $65 unlimited plan for just $35/month. If you know someone who works for Mobilicity, make sure to get in touch with them and ask about this amazing program, as they're probably the cheapest and most value-filled options available (as long as you're in a Mobilicity coverage zone). With all of these amazing deals, all that's left for the new entrant is expansion into more cities, which we'll hopefully see in the near future.

Rogers is starting a test project where wireless devices like phones and high speed rocket sticks will be sold in Shoppers Drug Mart location across the country. As a bonus for users who sign up at a Shoppers location, they will receive 50 000 Shoppers Optimum Bonus Points, a value of $85 apparently. This move follows many other carriers in expanding their distribution channels to additional retail stores, with Public Mobile possibly being the most recent having signed a deal with Gateway Newstands.

Mobilicity(Dave Wireless) published a press release today stating they are close to the launch of their network, which will first be offered in Toronto this Spring. They also have plans to roll-out the network in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, and Ottawa sometime following the initial launch in Toronto.

Also in the press release, it's stated that Mobilicity intends to "bring consumers truly unlimited plans with unbeatable value". Currently no other Canadian carriers offer completely unlimited data usage without throttling speeds, so it will be interesting to see what Mobilicity brings to the table. http://mobilicity.ca/news/38/18/Mobilicity-gets-CRTC-approval-on-track-to-launch-soon/
