Telus has recently launched a new trade-in program to encourage customers to recycle their unused devices, offering up to $200 in value. The program is relatively simple ? you can trade in up to 3 devices, for a maximum combined value of $200. You can use that ?credit? towards the purchase of a new device or accessory, though you must renew or activate a new account when doing so. The program is applicable to cell phones, mobile internet sticks and portable hotspots, but doesn?t currently extend to tablets, unfortunately.

In the press release, Telus mentioned they commissioned a survey to find out what Canadians do with their old devices. The results came in with 61% of Canadians saying they have between one and five old or unused cell phones laying around at home. This is a smart offering from Telus and eRecyclyingCorps in their collaborative effort, hopefully the appropriate value is given to those who want to take advantage!

Rogers and Telus recently re-introduced their $30 6GB data promotions, and now Bell has come forward with their own. Unlike Rogers and Telus however, the expiration date of the promotion was made available via internal documents for Bell, which is set at September 30th. Like previous years, however, this expiration date may be extended based on demand and device release, though it's a good idea to sign up early if you're interested.

As with the other carriers, the $30 for 6GB plan will require you to renew to a new 3 year term, or sign up for a new contract.

Every summer, we see the major carriers re-launch the $30 6GB data package, typically coinciding with the latest iPhone launch. Rogers and Telus are ahead of the game this year, with internal documents stating that they are each offering it up effective immediately. To get the package, you'll need to sign up for a new 3 year term or renew your current contract, as usual. Additionally, it must be added to a voice plan, and cannot be used as a stand-alone data only package. No word on exactly when the promotion will expire, but as always, you can expect it to be available for a limited time only. We'll likely see Bell follow suit in the near future, as the re-introduction of this plan is usually aligned among the major carriers.

A little while back, we saw Videotron launch a $30/6GB data add-on, and it didn't take long for a variety of other carriers to follow suit in the province. Bell and Virgin Mobile began offering their Quebec subscribers the same package, and Telus also did the same. Now, Rogers is responding to the competition, and has also made their own $30/6GB add-on available for Quebec customers. Theirs, like the others, is available for a "limited time", and speculation points to a July 31st expiry date. It includes 6GB of data usage and unlimited Social Networking, and requires you to renew on a new 3 year term.

Likely in response to Videotron and Virgin's(Quebec-only) recent introduction of their $30/6GB data package, Telus has gone ahead re-introduced their own 6GB promo add-on for Quebec customers. It's unfortunate that the rest of Canada can't benefit from this recent competition, but it's still great to see carriers working to win customers over in some markets at least.

The 6GB add-on from Telus is available for all device types, including iPhones, and will work for both 4G and CDMA handsets. It is available to new, existing, and renewing customers, and overage charges come in at the standard 5 cents/MB. The package is being offered on a promotional basis only, and will no longer be available after July 31st, so be sure to contact Telus if you're interested in adding it to your line.

It's clear that competition in Canada is booming right now, and as a result we're seeing most carriers launch promotions, discounts, and more. Virgin Mobile, Rogers, and Fido have all launched unlimited evenings and weekends beginning at 6pm on all price plans recently, putting more value into their existing options. Virgin Mobile and Rogers have launched the promotion for a limited time apparently, while Fido has made it a standard, permanent part of all plans. Additionally, Virgin Mobile's offer is only available to new customers, while Rogers and Fido are offering it up to anybody who renews on a 3-year term. Great to see competition resulting in price drops and added value, keep it up carriers!

As many other carriers do, Fido is now charging an administration fee on all hardware upgrades, an additional cost of $25 to customers wishing to get a new device. The fee will also apply to no term renewals, so all existing customers are basically affected. Not great news for Fido customers, but not exactly unexpected. Another stipulation pointed out, is that customers can use Fido dollars to upgrade, but the $25 fee will be tacked on to your bill no matter what. Telus has introduced a couple new policies recently that could result in customers getting upgrades sooner, and seeing lower, more proportionate early cancellation fees. The new hardware upgrade program introduces an Early Device Upgrade fee, which is calculated based on the type of the device you last received, in addition to the number of months remaining on your contract.

Here's how the upgrade fee is calculated:

Voice or Feature Phone - $5 x number of months remaining in contract. Includes standard flip phones, sliders, non-data devices
Smartphone or Feature phone (with minimum data commitment) - $10 x number of months remaining in contract. Includes BlackBerry, Android, and Windows Phone 7 devices
Premium Device - $15 x number of months remaining in contract. Includes iPhones

Here's the example provided on the Telus website:

Pat has an LG Keybo and wants to upgrade to an HTC Desire. He has 15 months left on his contract. What does Pat pay to upgrade?

Pat pays $75 (15 months x $5) in addition to the new device cost ($79.99)

There are a couple of rules that come along with this new upgrade program, like that you must complete at least 6 months of your current contract before being eligible for upgrade at all, and customers on the Credit Limit Program are no eligible for any early upgrade offer.

The cancellation policy is also based on which device you last received, but is more specific. Essentially, your early cancellation fee is calculated using the exact discount you received on your last device, and the time remaining on your contract. There is also a $50 admin fee for non-Quebec customers. It's important to note that this new cancellation fee policy applies only to customers who activated or renewed on or after November 21st, 2010. Other customer who wish to cancel would still have to pay $20 x the number of months remaining on their contract.

Here are some examples of how the policy works:

At activation, the customer receives a $400 discount on a 36 month service term. After 20 months, their cancellation fee will be:
Monthly pro-rated discount = $400 / 36 months = $11.11/month
Remaining discount = $400 - ($11.11 x 20 months) = $177.76
Non-Quebec: Total Cancellation fee = $177.76 + $50 Admin fee = $227.76
Quebec: Total Cancellation fee = $177.76

Telus has introduced a monthly data bonus of 5GB for new customers who sign up for the $65 (or greater) Clear Choice price plans, a pretty amazing incentive to choose Telus right now. To be eligible, customers must sign up for any Clear Choice voice and data plan that costs $65 or greater. Since the $65 plan already includes 1GB, customers taking advantage of this offer will get at least 6GB of monthly data usage for a minimum of $65.

According to the fine details of the offer, it's available to customers using any phone and is available until October 5th of this year. It seems as though existing customers are out of luck with this promotion, though the document does state that customer service representatives are to "follow existing escalation process for renewals".

We recently let you know what you could expect this quarter with Telus as far as hardware goes, and it looks like students looking to save some money will soon have an affordable option for their monthly service package. The new student price plan will be launching sometime in the coming weeks, and will be available until October 5th, 2010. In order to get the new plan, customers will have to renew their contract for 3 years.
