With Telus revamping their hardware upgrade program quite some time ago, and Rogers recently following suit, it doesn't come as much of a surprise that Bell is doing the same. Telus and Rogers have stepped up to offer early upgrade options for those who can't wait the full 2+ years to get another device at a discounted cost, and Bell's new program is looking similar.

According to recently leaked information, Bell will be making the changes tomorrow, May 22nd. The leaked document shows that "Select clients will have the opportunity to upgrade early by paying a fee on their Bell Mobility monthly invoice." They go on to say that the early upgrade fee will be calculated based on their eligible hardware upgrade date and can be paid either monthly or in one lump sum. Unfortunately the monthly option won't be available at launch, but should be active shortly afterwards. The monthly payment option is unique in Canada for device upgrades, and will hopefully be the center of Bell's focus when marketing this new program.

In addition to early upgrade eligibility being introduced, the document also makes mention of an "Eligible for Special Hardware" option. Basically, select clients will be able to upgrade to a device from a pre-determined list of special hardware. No word yet on what makes a customer eligible for this special early upgrade, but it's bound to have something to do with revenue generated and the type of device you own.

While it's exciting to see new smartphones launch, it's always nice to see the Prepaid users get a bit of attention as well. Rogers isn't ignoring their prepaid line-up, and has recently added the Nokia E5 to their list available devices. Coming in at $159.99, the E5 features a 2.36" (320x240) display and full QWERTY keyboard, and runs on Symbian OS S60 v9.3. It has a 5MP camera with LED flash and VGA video capture, and supports bluetooth and GPS connectivity. If you're looking for an affordable device on a prepaid account, the Nokia E5 could make a great choice.

Staples wasn't previously known for being a major retailer when it comes to mobile products, but they are certainly stepping up their game with the recent popularization of tablets. First they launched the BlackBerry PlayBook, right along with the carriers and other department stores to carry it. Now, they have updated their inventory to include two Android tablets, the Acer Iconia 10" tablet, and the Asus Eee Pad Transformer. They are also offering a Windows 7 tablet, also an Acer Iconia 10" model

The Android-powered Acer Iconia runs Gingerbread 3.0, and is powered by a dual-core 1GHz processor. It has a 10.1" (1280x800) touchscreen display, and features a 5MP rear-facing camera, and a 2MP front-facing secondary camera. It has a microHDMI port, and comes with 32GB of internal memory, along with a microSD card slot and connectivity options including Wi-Fi and bluetooth. The Android Acer Iconia 10" tablet is available for ordering now from Staples for $499.99. Unfortunately it's currently marked as an "Extended Delivery Product", meaning it will take 1-2 weeks for delivery. Additionally, it isn't available in-store as of yet, but should be coming to retail locations soon.

There is also a Windows 7 based Acer Iconia tablet available through the retailer, which features a 10.1" LED-backlit touchscreen display, and 2GB of RAM. It has a dual-core 1GHz AMD processor, and comes with 32GB of internal storage. The Windows 7 Iconia has two 1.3MP cameras (one in the front, one in the back), and features Wi-Fi and bluetooth connectivity. It comes with 2 USB 2.0 ports, and an HDMI port for wired connectivity as well. One of the best things about the Windows 7 Iconia tablet is that it comes with a full QWERTY keyboard dock, making typing significantly easier on the go. The dock also includes an additional USB port, and an Ethernet port for faster wired internet connectivity when at home. The Windows 7 Acer Iconia tablet is available from Staples now, though is also an "Extended Delivery Product". Orders will be shipped within 1-2 weeks and the device is not yet available at retail locations.

The last tablet on the list of recent additions to Staples line-up is the Asus Eee Pad Transformer, which is available in 16GB or 32GB versions. It has a 10.1" (1280x800) touchscreen display, and is powered by a dual-core 1GHz processor and 1GB of RAM. It runs on Android 3.0 Honeycomb, and has a 5MP camera, in addition to a 2MP front-facing secondary camera. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi and bluetooth, and it has a microHDMI port, in addition to a microUSB, full USB 2.0, and microSD card slot. The Asus Eee Transformer is available under the same conditions as the previous two tablets, with expected delivery taking 1-2 weeks. It isn't available in retail locations either, but will hopefully be added to store shelves soon. One of the major features of the Asus Eee Transformer is the attachable dock, which not only gives users a full QWERTY keyboard, but significant extension in battery life. No word on when this additional accessory will be made available, but it shouldn't take too long!

We just let you know that Rogers launched the LG Optimus Pad, a high-end Android powered tablet. It looks like they've also gone ahead and launched an entry-level Android handset from the same manufacturer, the LG Phoenix.

The LG Phoenix runs on Android 2.2 Froyo and features a 3.2" (320x480) touchscreen display, along with a 3.2MP camera. It supports Wi-Fi (including hotspot) connectivity, in addition to bluetooth and GPS, and supports up to 32GB of memory via microSD cards. A few weeks back, we let you know that Rogers was getting set to launch a slew of new LG Android devices, one of which being the LG Optimus Pad. Starting today, the Optimus Pad is officially available, and comes in at $449.99 on a 3 year term, or $699.99 contract-free.

The Samsung Galaxy S series of handsets, including the Fascinate, Captivate, and Vibrant have been favourites of Canadians since their launch last year. Even the Galaxy Tab did well, being one of the first tablets available besides Apple's iPad. Unfortunately, all of these devices have been stuck on Froyo since at least December of last year, and while speculation pointed to a future Gingerbread update, confirmation was still awaited.

Finally, Samsung has announced that they will be pushing Android 2.3 Gingerbread out to all Galaxy S devices, including the Tab. The European market will get the updates first, expected "mid-May", so they should see it any day now. Unfortunately no word was given regarding Canada specifically, but they did say that it would be "gradually rolled out to other European markets, North America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East Asia, Africa, and the rest of the world according to the regional plan".

Hopefully Canadians can get all of the features and benefits of Gingerbread on the Galaxy S handsets and Tab soon! Despite the lack of clear details, we're expecting it to be available by mid-Summer at the latest, but that's just our best guess!

Research in Motion has recently recalled approximately 1000 BlackBerry PlayBooks. According to an official statement from RIM, the recall is due to an issue with some PlayBooks being "unable to properly load software upon initial set-up". The statement also points out that many of the affected devices are still in the distribution channels and haven't reached customers, so hopefully few people will be impacted.

While this recall certainly can't help RIM and the PlayBook's success, it is a fairly small number in comparison to the number of units sold. Users who do experience the described issue are encouraged to contact RIM to determine next steps.

Sony Ericsson used be known for their Walkman and Cyber-shot handsets, and were met with considerable success as a manufacturer before smartphones became popular. Lately, they have been placing most of their focus on Android devices, and it looks like the specialties might re-appear, together.

Images were recently leaked online of a Sony Ericsson Xperia handset that is branded with "cyber-shot" text. There isn't any Android branding on the device, that's visible anyways, but the button layout strongly hints at that it will be an Android handset. While this one is definitely still just a rumour, it makes sense that Sony Ericsson would make a move like this. Hopefully we'll see this device, or something similar, launch very soon!
